Grand National 2024 Changes

Grand National Implements New Safety Measures for 2024

Field Reduction and Other Changes to Enhance Horse Welfare

The Aintree Grand National, one of the most iconic horse races in the world, is set to undergo significant changes for the 2024 edition, with a focus on enhancing horse welfare and safety.

The most notable change will be a reduction in the maximum field size from 40 to 34 runners. This decision has been made following extensive consultation with animal rights groups and veterinary experts, who have argued that a smaller field will reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

In addition to the field reduction, a number of other safety measures will be implemented for the 2024 Grand National, including:

  • Increased veterinary presence on the racecourse
  • Improved medical facilities for horses
  • A new "safety zone" at the start of the race, where horses can be withdrawn if they are deemed unfit to continue

These changes have been welcomed by animal rights groups, who have long campaigned for improvements to the safety of the Grand National. The RSPCA said that the reduction in field size was a "positive step" and called for further changes in the future.

The Grand National is one of the most challenging horse races in the world, and the changes that have been implemented for 2024 are designed to make it safer for both horses and riders. With these new safety measures in place, the Grand National will continue to be a thrilling and iconic event for years to come.
