Parliamentary Approval Slashes Traffic Violation Fines

Reduced Penalties for Certain Infractions

Immediate Effect Reported

Nicosia, Cyprus - In a move that has been welcomed by motorists across the country, the Cypriot Parliament has approved a significant reduction in fines for certain traffic violations.

The decision, which takes effect immediately, follows months of discussions between the government and opposition parties. It aims to address concerns over the high cost of fines, which many drivers felt were disproportionate to the severity of the offenses.

According to the new legislation, the maximum fine for exceeding the speed limit by up to 20 kilometers per hour has been reduced from €300 to €150. The penalty for driving without a seatbelt has also been halved, from €150 to €75.

The Minister of Transport, Marios Demetriades, said the changes were necessary to ensure that the fines were "fair and proportionate." He added that the government hoped the move would encourage more drivers to comply with traffic regulations.
