Local elections 2023: Labour and Liberal Democrats make gains
Conservatives suffer losses as voters turn to opposition parties
Labour has won enough seats in the UK's 2024 general election to have a majority in the House of Commons.
The party has gained 20 seats, while the Conservatives have lost 30. The Scottish National Party has also made gains, winning 10 seats.
The results are a blow to Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has been in office for less than a year. They also suggest that the public is increasingly dissatisfied with the government's handling of the economy and other issues.
Labour leader Keir Starmer said the results were a "vote for change". He said: "The people of this country have sent a clear message: they want a government that will put their needs first."
Conservative Party chairman Greg Hands said the results were "disappointing". He said: "We will need to learn from these results and come back stronger in the next election."
The Liberal Democrats have also made gains in the local elections, winning 5 seats. The party's leader, Ed Davey, said the results were a "sign of hope" for the future.
The Green Party has also gained 2 seats, while the UK Independence Party has lost 1 seat.
