1952 Tehachapi earthquake: 70 years since one of California's largest temblors

What happened?

At 4:52 a.m. on July 21, 1952, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Tehachapi, California. The quake caused widespread damage, with buildings collapsing and roads buckling.

The impact

The earthquake killed 12 people and injured more than 100. It also caused an estimated $1 billion in damage.

The quake was the third strongest earthquake in recorded California history at the time.
